NEW YORK--(CPR) -- Pfizer Inc. today issued a $1.6 billion settlement with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over its patent for the anti-impotence drug Viagra, which had been on the market in the United States for nearly a year.
The agreement between Pfizer and the FDA, which will be the first in a series of drug lawsuits against the makers of the anti-impotence drug, was announced at a news conference at the drug company's New York headquarters. The lawsuit alleged that the FDA violated the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act by granting the companies permission to combine the generic version of Viagra with another drug similar to that approved by the FDA. Pfizer did not respond to a request for comment.
