The drug that will give the Viagra a green light for marketing has been on the market for four years. Pfizer has made a public disclosure of a potential new drug application for the drug that would allow doctors to prescribe it to patients without being required to take the drug in a doctor’s office.
The company’s marketing and advertising materials include a television advertisement for the drug, a letter written by a patient’s doctor to the manufacturer, and a list of patients who would like to prescribe the drug.
“Pfizer’s product does not meet the approved safety standards for Viagra,” said John A. Calan, Pfizer’s senior vice president for pharmaceuticals and consumer products. “We expect Pfizer’s new product to be approved by the FDA in the near future.”
Pfizer’s new drug application is pending final approval in the United States, but will be presented at a meeting of the drug maker’s board of directors in January.
The drugmaker has been under pressure to update the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about the new information, which is expected to be presented later this week.
Viagra, also known as sildenafil citrate, is the active ingredient in the popular prescription drug Viagra. Viagra is a popular over-the-counter drug used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. Cánhoff said he had received two messages about the company’s drug application from patients. One was for the drug’s potential to be approved for use in children. Cánhoff said the second message would be about the drug’s use to treat impotence.
“The information is important because it’s going to be a little bit of a challenge to get that information to the physicians who work in the office,” Henry said.
The Viagra product has been on the market for more than three decades. Viagra is the active ingredient in the erectile dysfunction drug Levitra. Levitra is a prescription drug prescribed by a doctor to men with erectile dysfunction. Viagra is taken by mouth.
In the new application, the company will ask the FDA to review the information about the product’s potential to be approved. The FDA will also ask Pfizer to submit a letter to the company explaining that the product does not meet the approved safety standards for Viagra.
Cánhoff said he expected to receive a letter in the coming months. He said he would review the information and make recommendations for how the company would approach the application.
Viagra is still under investigation by the FDA for its possible side effects, which Cánhoff said could include dizziness, headache, fainting, and heart palpitations. Cánhoff said he would also review the information about the drug’s potential for side effects and recommend other drugs that are not approved for use in children.
Cánhoff said Pfizer would update the FDA about the information and will submit an application for the new drug.
The drugmaker also will submit a letter to the FDA, which will include information about the potential for side effects and possible drug interactions, Cánhoff said. That letter will be posted in the New Drug Application (NDA) for Viagra.
